2018 Blair Collective Concert

Deadline for Submissions: September 1, 2018

Event Date: November 1, 2018
Event Venue: Hulsey Recital Hall, UAB
Instruments: 1 saxophone (soprano, alto), 1 bassoon, percussion, and piano (duo, trio, or quartet; no solos or solos with electronics)
Duration: Preference will be given to works of 10 minutes or less

Requirements:  Alliance members in good standing are invited to submit one work for the Blair Collective concert to be held on November 1, 2018, in Hulsey Recital Hall, UAB.

Details:

Please submit one piece (duo, trio, or quartet; no solos or solos with electronics) for the following instruments:

  • 1 saxophone (soprano, alto)
  • 1 bassoon
  • Percussion
  • Piano

Pieces using percussion should focus on using either:

  • One keyboard instrument (glockenspiel, vibraphone, OR marimba);
  • A small multi-percussion set-up (five instruments at the most);
  • OR one keyboard instrument with a few small non-pitched percussion instruments added to the setup (cowbells, cymbals, wood blocks, pipes, flower pots, etc.).

Works may include stereo fixed media electronics (no interactive electronics or solo works with electronics).

Preference will be given to works of 10 minutes or less.

Only one submission per composer will be considered.

The deadline for scores and parts is August 15, 2018.

How to submit:

All submissions should be sent via email to with the subject heading “BAMA Blair Collective Call – Your Name,” and should include an attachment or a link (Dropbox, Google Drive, WeTransfer, etc) with the following files:

  1. A PDF of the score and a set of parts (PDFs can also be sent as an attachment)
  2. An audio recording, if available (MIDI realizations are acceptable)
  3. A PDF document listing the name of the composer, title of the piece, instrumentation, duration, short biographical statement, and program notes.

Failure to supply all required materials with submissions will result in the composition not being considered for programming.


Spring 2018 BAMA Players Concert

Deadline for Submissions: January 16, 2018
Deadline for Scores: January 16, 2018
Event Date: Tentatively, May 13, 2018
Event Venue: Tentatively, Samford University’s Brock Recital Hall
Instruments: any combination of 1 flute, 1 Bb clarinet, string quartet, 1 piano; works that require additional performer(s) will also be considered, and BAMA can assist in finding performers, if needed
Duration: Preference will be given to works of 10 minutes or less

NOTE: Submissions that were not selected for Birmingham New Music Festival 2017 will be considered for programming on this concert IF RESUBMITTED IN RESPONSE TO THIS CALL.

NOTE: A complete score must be submitted no later than the deadline of January 16, 2018, along with materials described below

Requirements: Alliance members in good standing are invited to submit one piece for the following instruments in any combination:

  • 1 flute
  • 1 Bb clarinet
  • string quartet
  • 1 piano
  • Please note: Works that require additional performer(s) (i.e. voice, horn, etc.) will also be considered, and BAMA can assist in finding performers, if needed

Composers are limited to two submissions for this call.

How to submit:

  1. A PDF score (PDF scores can also be sent as an attachment)
  2. An audio recording (MIDI realizations are acceptable)
  3. A PDF document listing the name of the composer, title of the piece, instrumentation, duration, short biographical statement, and program notes.

Selected composers will be notified in early February.

If the information above is not provided when submitted, upon notification of a work’s acceptance for performance, the composer must supply all pertinent performance materials including a full score and individual parts, a concise one-paragraph bio of the composer, and a concise one-paragraph program note about the work.

Failure to supply these materials in a timely manner will result in the composition not being presented during the concert.


2018 – Chamber Music @ AEIVA

Duration: No specific maximum duration, though the concert will be one hour long.

BAMA Call For Submissions – Chamber Music @ AEIVA

BAMA is partnering for a third time with the UAB series “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” to present a concert that connects music with the art of David Levinthal, which will be on display in the AEIVA galleries.

Concert date:  February 22, 2018. 5:00pm reception, 5:30pm concert
Submission deadline:  January 15, 2018
Location: Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts lobby
Instruments: Any combination of percussion, violin, and flute (one person per part). For percussion, limit compositions to the following list, and contact Laura if you would like to include anything extra:

  • Marimba
  • Small tam tam/wind gong
  • 2 tom-toms
  • 1 pair bongos
  • Small, miscellaneous pieces: 1 sus cymbal, triangle, tinkly bells, finger cymbals, etc.

Duration: No specific maximum duration, though the concert will be one hour long.

Requirements: Compositions must relate in some way to the photography of David Levinthal. While the specific works on display have not been finalized, consider the following photos, all at davidlevinthal.com: Barbie, Passion, Mein Kampf, Baseball, Modern Romance.

The Alabama String Quartet Collection

Deadline for Submissions: June 30, 2017

Duration: 10 minutes or less

The Birmingham Art Music Alliance will partner with the Amernet Quartet to record string quartets by Alabama composers, for subsequent release as audio CD(s). This call is open to all current Submitting BAMA members.

  • By submitting work, you agree to contribute toward CD production costs, payable before recording begins. The target is $30/minute or less, not to exceed $40/minute. We will provide the exact rate following review of proposals in July. Except for extenuating circumstances (piece not recorded, CD release is canceled, etc), this fee is non-refundable.
  • Signed agreements with participating composers will be enacted before the CD is produced.
  • You may list up to two works for string quartet (no electronics or other instruments) in order of preference. Alternates will not be considered until all first submissions are vetted.
  • It is acceptable to submit proposed works with working titles. If estimating duration, please round up — you can provide precise timing with score.
  • Due date for scores, bios, notes, and participation fee is October 1, 2017. More detail will come, following review of submissions to this call.

Any submissions not selected for the BNMF will be considered for programming on subsequent concerts.

  • 1 flute
  • 1 Bb clarinet
  • string quartet
  • 1 piano

NOTE: In an effort to have all BAMA submitting members programmed during the festival, any member who has not yet been programmed will receive priority over those who have already been programmed for other festival events, such as the Miolina concert. Any submissions not selected for the BNMF will be considered for programming on subsequent concerts.

Requirements: Alliance members in good standing are invited to submit one piece in the following categories:

  1. Electronics. Two-channel audio recording alone, or with live processing
  2. Compositions performed by the composer, or by performer(s) provided by the composer, preferably with electronics.

Works submitted must be 10 minutes or less in duration.

Composers are limited to one submission for this call.

How to submit: No longer open for submissions …and should include a link (Dropbox, Google Drive, WeTransfer, etc) to the following files:

  1. A PDF score, if necessary (PDF scores can also be sent as an attachment)
  2. An audio recording (MIDI realizations are acceptable)
